Phone Water Damage? What to Do Immediately
Dropped your phone in water? Act fast! These critical steps in the first few minutes can mean the difference between saving your phone and permanent damage.
Quick Tip: The faster you act, the better your chances of saving your phone. Time is critical!
Immediate Actions (Do These First!)
✅ DO:
- Get it out of the water immediately — Every second counts!
- Turn it off right away — Power off completely. Don't try to check if it works.
- Remove the case — This allows water to escape from the edges.
- Remove SIM card and tray — Use the SIM ejector tool or paperclip.
- Remove any attached accessories — Headphones, cables, etc.
- Pat dry with a soft cloth — Gently wipe all exterior surfaces.
❌ DON'T:
- Don't turn it on — This can cause a short circuit
- Don't press any buttons — This can push water deeper
- Don't plug it in — Charging while wet is dangerous
- Don't use a hair dryer — Heat can damage internal components
- Don't shake the phone — This spreads water inside
- Don't try to take it apart — You'll void the warranty and cause more damage
How to Dry Your Phone
Method 1: Rice (Not Recommended)
While commonly suggested, rice is not the best option. It doesn't absorb moisture effectively and can leave dust inside your phone.
Method 2: Silica Gel Packets (Best)
This is the recommended method. Silica gel packets (like those from shoe boxes or electronics) are much more effective at absorbing moisture.
- Place your phone in an airtight container or zip-lock bag
- Surround it completely with silica gel packets
- Seal the container
- Leave it for at least 48-72 hours (longer is better)
- Don't open the container to check — each time lets in moisture
Method 3: Professional Drying
If available, use a professional phone drying service or vacuum chamber. These are the most effective methods.
Signs of Water Damage
- Screen issues: Flickering, unresponsive touch, or black spots
- Audio problems: Distorted sound, muffled speakers
- Charging issues: Phone won't charge or charges slowly
- Camera problems: Foggy lens or water spots
- Constant overheating
- Liquid damage indicator (LDI) — Check the SIM tray area; most phones have a white dot that turns red when wet
How Long to Wait?
Minimum: 24-48 hours
Recommended: 72 hours (3 days) or longer
The longer you wait, the more likely all moisture will evaporate. If possible, wait a full week before turning on your phone.
After Your Phone Dries
- Reinsert the SIM card
- Try turning it on
- If it doesn't turn on, try charging for 30 minutes
- Test all functions: screen, speakers, cameras, charging
- If anything doesn't work, you may need repair or replacement
Water Damage by Phone Type
iPhone
- iPhones have LDI stickers — check near SIM tray
- Many newer iPhones are water-resistant (IP67/IP68) but not waterproof
- Apple's warranty doesn't cover water damage
Android Phones
- Many have IP68 ratings but this doesn't guarantee protection
- Salt water is more damaging than fresh water
- Different manufacturers have different water resistance ratings
Salt Water vs Fresh Water
Salt water is more damaging! Salt accelerates corrosion. If dropped in salt water:
- Rinse with fresh water immediately (this removes the salt)
- Then follow the drying steps above
- Salt water damage is often irreversible
Prevention Tips
- Use a waterproof case — Especially for beach, pool, or water activities
- Keep phone away from bathroom — Most water damage happens in bathrooms
- Check pockets — Before doing laundry!
- Consider phone insurance — That covers water damage
