Bluetooth Not Working? How to Fix It

Updated March 2026 · iPhone · Android · Windows · Mac · 12 min read

Quick Navigation

Bluetooth issues range from the device not being found at all, to repeated dropouts, to audio cutting out. The good news: almost all Bluetooth problems have straightforward fixes. This guide covers comprehensive troubleshooting for all major platforms.

1. Universal Fixes (Try These First on Any Device)

Basic troubleshooting steps

  1. Toggle Bluetooth off and on — but use Settings, not the quick-access toggle, as some toggles don't fully restart the Bluetooth stack.
  2. Check the other device — is it charged? Is it in pairing mode? Is it already connected to a different phone?
  3. Move closer — Bluetooth range is typically 10 meters (33 ft) in open air; walls and interference reduce this significantly.
  4. Restart both devices — a full power cycle clears Bluetooth state machine issues.
  5. Forget the device and re-pair — go to Bluetooth settings, find the device in the paired list, tap "Forget" or "Unpair," then pair fresh.
  6. Check for interference — Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, and other 2.4 GHz devices can interfere with Bluetooth.
  7. Update firmware/software — ensure both devices have the latest updates.

Understanding Bluetooth versions

  1. Bluetooth 4.0/4.1: Older standard, shorter range, more prone to interference.
  2. Bluetooth 4.2: Improved speed and security over 4.0.
  3. Bluetooth 5.0: 2x speed, 4x range compared to 4.2.
  4. Bluetooth 5.1/5.2/5.3: Direction finding, improved audio, lower power consumption.
  5. LE Audio: Newest standard with Auracast broadcast audio support.

2. iPhone Bluetooth Not Working

iPhone Users: Complete iOS Bluetooth troubleshooting.

iPhone Fix Steps

  1. Toggle Bluetooth in Settings → Bluetooth (not Control Center — the CC toggle only disconnects, it doesn't restart Bluetooth).
  2. Forget the problematic device: tap the (i) button next to it → Forget This Device.
  3. Restart your iPhone: hold Side + Volume Down → slide to power off → restart.
  4. Update iOS: Settings → General → Software Update.
  5. Reset Network Settings (this also resets all Bluetooth pairings): Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
  6. Check for iOS beta issues — beta versions sometimes have Bluetooth bugs.
  7. Try resetting all settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset → Reset All Settings.

iPhone Bluetooth not discovering devices

  1. Ensure the other device is in pairing mode (usually indicated by flashing LED).
  2. Turn off other nearby Bluetooth devices that might be interfering.
  3. Check if the device requires an app — some smart devices need their companion app for initial setup.
  4. Try pairing in Airplane Mode with just Bluetooth enabled.
iOS tip: If AirPods specifically keep disconnecting, try putting them back in the case for 30 seconds, then re-opening the case near your iPhone.

3. Android Bluetooth Not Working

Android Users: Complete Android Bluetooth troubleshooting for all manufacturers.

Android Fix Steps

  1. Go to Settings → Connected Devices → Bluetooth, toggle off and then on.
  2. Forget the device: tap the gear icon next to the device → Forget.
  3. Clear Bluetooth cache: Settings → Apps → Show System Apps → Bluetooth → Storage → Clear Cache.
  4. Also clear cache for Bluetooth MIDI Service if shown.
  5. Restart your phone.
  6. Ensure Bluetooth scan is enabled: Settings → Location → App Permissions → check Bluetooth scanning is on (required for some devices to discover nearby gadgets).
  7. Check for system updates: Settings → System → System Update.

Manufacturer-specific fixes

  1. Samsung: Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → tap gear icon → Unpair. Try clearing Bluetooth cache in Recovery Mode (Power + Volume Up).
  2. Google Pixel: Settings → Connected Devices → Bluetooth → Forget. Clear cache via Settings → Apps → See all apps → Bluetooth → Storage.
  3. Xiaomi/Redmi: Settings → Bluetooth → tap device → Unpair. Check Battery Saver isn't restricting Bluetooth.
  4. OnePlus: Settings → Bluetooth → (i) icon → Forget. Disable Battery Optimization for Bluetooth.
  5. Huawei: Settings → Bluetooth → gear icon → Unpair. Check App Launch settings aren't killing Bluetooth.

4. Windows 10 / 11 Bluetooth Not Working

Windows Users: Complete PC Bluetooth troubleshooting.

Fix Steps

  1. Open Device Manager (Win+X → Device Manager) → expand Bluetooth.
  2. Right-click your Bluetooth adapter → Update driver → Search automatically.
  3. If the adapter isn't listed at all, check Network Adapters or Other Devices — it may show a yellow warning icon.
  4. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter: Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Bluetooth → Run.
  5. Restart the Bluetooth service: Win+R → services.msc → find Bluetooth Support Service → right-click → Restart.
  6. If nothing works: right-click the adapter in Device Manager → Uninstall device → restart your PC. Windows will auto-reinstall the driver.

Advanced Windows fixes

  1. Check BIOS/UEFI: Some laptops have Bluetooth disabled at the firmware level — press F2/Del at startup to enter BIOS and check.
  2. Run SFC scan: Open Command Prompt as admin and run sfc /scannow to check for system file corruption.
  3. Check for Windows updates: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
  4. Reinstall Bluetooth stack: Download the latest drivers from your PC manufacturer's website.
  5. Check Airplane mode: Ensure Airplane mode is off or Bluetooth is manually enabled while in Airplane mode.
Windows tip: Check if Bluetooth is enabled in BIOS/UEFI. Some laptops have Bluetooth disabled at the firmware level — press F2/Del at startup to enter BIOS and check.
